APS Dragonfly D’MOD GBB Side Arm [Build Review]
When you begin thinking about purchasing a new pᎥstol, what is the first aspect that comes to mind? Is it how many FPS it shoots at? Is it the look of the pᎥstol? Is it the energy type? Cost? These are the questions that I found asking myself when I visited my local Airsoft shop Mercia Airsoft searching for a new pᎥstol.
I entered the shop with a very open mind as I know that there is a multitude of different pᎥstols available. Some with gas blow back and some without, some which require the use of CO2 bulbs and some that use standard Green gas and also others that are operated by batteries or springs. Semi auto and full auto pᎥstols and not to mention the various different designs and brands available. I knew that I had a lot of work and research on my hands to find the ultimate pᎥstol for me!
After browsing around and looking at all of the incredible products that Mercia Airsoft has to offer, in the corner of the shop I noticed the ASP Dragonfly DMOD GBB. It was immaculately presented in a clear Perspex box with a warm lighting shining through the front which spelled ‘look at me’. I asked Ash (Mercia Airsoft Owner) if I can have a play around with the pᎥstol to get the feel of what it was like as I have never seen one of these before.
From the first moment I held the pᎥstol in my hand I knew that it was the one for me. Once I delved into more detail in terms of specs and its performance, I must admit, this pᎥstol has made an incredibly positive impression on me. It has so many pros, I am in fact struggling to find any cons. So here’s a breakdown of the positives and negatives of the Dragonfly:
- Very comfortable to hold
- Stippled Grip
- Fibre Optic Sights
- Aftermarket Holster Compatible
- Gas Blow Back
- Affordable – £79.99
- Dual Power Source
- The gas magazine has broken a lip during firing
- Just like majority of other gas pᎥstols it doesn’t like the cold
- The CO2 bulbs can sometimes be a little temperamental
- Slide can sometimes feel a little stiff

The list of pros is potentially endless for this particular pᎥstol. What I personally find the most attractive is the dual gas compatibility as this pᎥstol takes both Green Gas and CO2 without the need for any modification. You simply switch over the magazines. Also the magazines themselves are very easy to use although to change the CO2 bulbs you do require a H key which is supplied with the pᎥstol along with some spare o-rings.
Combine that with the pure beauty of the design and the intricate engraving on the slide and the sturdy stipple grip, it’s a true beauty.
Although I am literally scraping the bottom of the barrel to find anything wrong with this pᎥstol, there are still a few minor issues. The standard problem with gas not working in the cold could be classed as a con, however as there is an option to switch over to the CO2 mag this improves the replica’s performance in colder conditions (under 10°C) – providing you don’t get a dodgy bulb.
The slide could also be improved in order to create a smoother cycle as I did notice that there was the odd few times it felt a little stiff. A bit of lube will sort this issue though. Finally another slight issue I’ve had so far with the Gas mag is the feeder lip slightly coming away after shooting it for a day, although its a slight con it can be easily fixed. All in all I seriously wouldn’t be put off by these problems.

Would I consider upgrading it? Probably not! This is due to the unique features that the pᎥstol already possesses and it’s budget price tag.
Although, for some people I know that a straight out of the box pᎥstol just doesn’t cut it, therefore if you wish to upgrade the pᎥstol you can easily change the inner barrel, hop and the slide. I cannot comment too much on how easy this pᎥstol is to upgrade and how much those high end upgrades will impact its performance as I haven’t had the need to consider doing it to my Dragonfly. However, I can say that disassembly and assembly is rather easy and I don’t feel that you will have a problem with upgrading certain elements of the pᎥstol should you wish to do so.
Airsoft Ranch Verdict
So, to finish my review on the stunning APS Dragonfly DMOD pᎥstol – do I recommend this pᎥstol? YES ABSOLUTELY!
All in all, this is one of the best pᎥstols I own and it is perfect straight out of the box. I would highly recommend it to anybody who is torn between Gas and/or C02 as it gives you the option of having both energy sources without further need for modification. It is very reliable in terms of shooting and performance and I have had no problems at all with any gas leaking from the CO2 mags.
It is beautifully designed, very comfortable to hold and the blow back is great. It also has a nice “pop” to it when it goes off which for me is an added bonus. I wouldn’t recommend upgrading this pᎥstol as it would take the beauty away (although I know some people will disagree with me).
Cost wise, it is very affordable coming in at the moment from Mercia Airsoft at £79.99 with additional mags available starting from £24.99.
